How ESA Letters Work in Idaho
The federal Fair Housing Act covers every town in Idaho, from Boise to the smallest farm town. It lets a person with a mental health condition ask a landlord to make room for an emotional support animal.
Your letter needs to come from a mental health provider licensed in Idaho. We match you with one. They talk with you about how you have been feeling and how your animal helps. If an ESA is part of the right care for you, they write the letter.
A Fast-Growing Treasure Valley
Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell and Eagle have filled up with new neighbors in recent years. Rents went up, and many newer apartment buildings charge pet deposits and monthly pet rent. Some limit dog size or breed.
With an approved ESA, those pet fees and limits do not apply to your animal. You still pay for any damage, the same as any tenant.
Long Drives and Small Towns
A lot of Idaho is rural. Getting to a provider can mean a long drive, especially in winter. You do not need to make that drive to start. Fill out the form on this page, and our team reaches out to set up your evaluation.
We help people in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Lewiston, Moscow and the towns in between.
Students at Boise State, Idaho State and U of I
College is a big change. Students at Boise State, Idaho State and the University of Idaho often move into shared housing for the first time. New stress and new routines can bring on anxiety or depression. Many college housing options follow fair housing rules. Ask your housing office how they handle ESA requests.
Military Families at Mountain Home
Families connected to Mountain Home Air Force Base move often. Every move means a new lease and new pet rules. If an emotional support animal helps you or someone in your family, a letter from an Idaho-licensed provider lets you make that request at your next home in the state.
Short Days and Cold Months
Idaho winters are long and cold, and the days get short. Some people notice their mood drop every year when the weather turns. An animal at home can be steady company through it. If that sounds like you, talk with a provider.
What an Idaho Landlord Can Still Ask
- To see your letter, if your need is not obvious.
- That your animal behaves and does not damage the home.
- That you pay for any damage your animal causes.
They cannot ask for your diagnosis or your medical records.
Getting Started in Idaho
Fill out the form on this page with a few details about you and your pet. An Idaho-licensed provider reviews your answers and talks with you. You can do it from home, no matter how far you are from Boise.
When your letter is ready, send it to your landlord or property manager. Many people send it with their rental application, so the pet question is settled before they sign. Keep a copy for yourself.
Price
The evaluation is $150, and each extra pet is $100. Your letter is usually ready within one business day after your evaluation. See our Good Faith Estimate.
